About Banksgate Fell Ponies

Breeding and Handling at Banksgate

We aim to produce carefully bred, hardy black fell ponies of high quality and substance without coarseness. We are also looking to achieve good, straight and active movement, correct confirmation and alert, intelligent pony character.

Our ponies are all handled and sympathetically taught to behave themselves from an early age. After weaning our foals are given basic training with the halter, stabled alone, walked out independently, taught to load willingly into a trailer and to cooperate with the farrier. They are also introduced to traffic. We feel that this firm basic training and lots of handling at an early age makes for a confident pony and find that many so called problems of temperament never appear when this has been done.

We believe in regular worming of our stock and from our own experience and talking to other breeders feel that it prevents many problems.

Many of our ponies have been shown successfully at the highest levels. We have amongst our present herd of twenty four, several County level champions and prize winners.
